Charmadi Ghat
Twenty-five kilometres of hairpins off the plateau to the coast, through the wettest forest in the district.
Charmadi is the pass that takes the Chikmagalur plateau down to Dakshina Kannada — about 25 km of continuous descent from Kottigehara to Charmadi village, dropping through some of the densest forest in the Western Ghats. In the monsoon the whole slope runs with water, temporary falls appear on the rock face above the road, and cloud sits in the valley below the hairpins. The viewpoints on the way down look back at the Charmadi ridge: Ettina Bhuja, Amedikallu, Jenukallu Gudda.

It is the district's great drive, and the single best place to understand why the Western Ghats are a biodiversity hotspot — you cross four or five distinct forest types in half an hour.
History
The ghat has carried trade between the Malnad and the coast for centuries and was formalised as a road under British administration; it remains one of only three vehicle passes between this stretch of plateau and the sea.
Travel tips
Check the road is open before you commit — landslides close it without much warning in July and August. Fill fuel at Kottigehara. Drive it downhill in the morning and uphill in the evening if you can; the light is better and the freight traffic is lighter.
Please note
Do: use the marked lay-bys — stopping on a hairpin is how accidents happen here. Do: sound the horn on blind bends; lorries hold the centre line. Don't: feed the macaques at the viewpoints, and keep car windows up where they gather. Don't: leave bottles or wrappers on the slope; there is no collection, and it washes straight into the streams.
