Coffee Museum, Chikmagalur
The bean's journey, from Baba Budan to your cup
Run by the Coffee Board on the edge of town, the Coffee Museum walks through the history of Indian coffee — from Baba Budan's seven beans to modern estate processing — with galleries, a working demonstration of grading and roasting, and a café to taste the result. It is the best indoor stop in Chikmagalur and a good primer before visiting the plantations.
What to do here
- Walk the history and processing galleries
- See a roasting and grading demonstration
- Taste estate coffee at the café
- Visit before touring a plantation
The one place that ties the whole district's coffee identity together.
History
India's coffee story begins on the Baba Budangiri hills above the town; the museum is run by the Coffee Board of India to tell that story.
Travel tips
In Chikmagalur town, run to explain how the crop that defines the district actually works — from Baba Budan's seven beans to modern processing. An hour is enough. Pair it with an estate walk, which most stays around town can arrange.
Please note
Do: ask about the difference between washed and natural processing — it is what makes Chikmagalur coffee distinctive. Do: buy beans here or direct from an estate rather than from a highway stall. Don't: photograph where the signs prohibit it.
